Magic: The Gathering Black Lotus Power Nine

In Magic: The Gathering, Power Nine basically refers to a set of nine cards that were only printed early in the collectible trading card game’s history, consisting of the Black Lotus, Ancestral Recall, Time Walk, Mox Pearl, Mox Sapphire, Mox Jet, Mox Ruby, Mox Emerald, and Timetwister. All nine of these cards are considered rares and were only printed in the Alpha, Beta, and Unlimited sets between late 1993 to early 1994. Recently, a gem mint condition Black Lotus from the Alpha set sold for a whopping $166,100 on eBay, the highest priced yet.

Artist Christopher Rush painted the illustration on the Black Lotus card, who was at the time a Wizards of the Coast employee. Both the Alpha and Beta versions are considered to be the game’s most valuable non-error cards, due to the more limited print runs and black borders of those sets. An estimated 1100 cards were printed for Alpha, with 3300 for Beta.
