Meta has spent years striving to connect the digital and real worlds, and with Hyperscape, they have finally brought that quest into your living room. The company released this tool last fall, but it was only available to single users; starting this week, you can add your friends. Users can share links to their homes, kitchens, or closets and invite up to 8 people along for the ride, whether to catch up or play a game.
Since September, Quest 3 and Quest 3S users aged 18 and up have had early access to scanning, allowing them to glimpse inside the world of Hyperscape. Grab the Hyperscape capture software, put on your headset, and take a trip around your environment. The headset’s external cameras capture every nook and detail in a matter of minutes. The cloud then takes over, crunching away for hours to combine everything into a 3D model that is truly uncannily accurate. Load it into VR and you’ll be roaming around a faithful reproduction of your couch or coffee table, with every detail visible, from the scratch on the wall to the sunshine flowing through the curtains. Meta does all of the heavy lifting on their end, so all your headset has to do is stream the results.

Sharing differs from how these areas were previously used. Once the update is complete and a link is available, scan your room again. Send it off, and anyone with a Quest 3 or 3S can join in. Mobile users can also get involved by downloading the Meta Horizon app to their phones. Everyone sees the same view moves around together and hears each other in all the usual places. Eight just feels right for a casual catch-up, though there are plans to increase that number soon. Initially, they used private scans to keep things secure, and links are still invite-only, so no public galleries here, just your genuine friends popping by in your setup.
Beyond hangouts, Hyperscape integrates VR into daily living. Teachers could scan a classroom for remote teachings while keeping the familiar atmosphere intact. Brands might provide store or studio visits that do not require travel. Developers are already considering how to include extras such as interactive objects or soundtracks that change with the group.
