Zachary Matchett-Smith of Zac Builds wanted to build a modern PlayStation Portable, but without resorting to pure emulation. So, he decided to upgrade the handheld itself rather than replace all of its hardware.
This PSP-1000 model is one of the easier variants to mod, especially when it comes to the screen. First, all of the buttons were removed and cleaned to ensure optimal movement. Next, the factory screen was replaced with a 4.3″ IPS LCD panel with 1000 nits of brightness. A memory stick adapter lets you load games directly on microSD cards rather than Sony’s pricey Memory Stick PRO Duo cards. To increase the battery capacity, Zach swapped in one from a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra smartphone. Last, but not least, the entire charging port was overhauled to give it wireless charging capabilities.
