Moon Cave Lunar Tunnel
Researchers from the University of Trento have discovered the existence of a Moon cave that could one day be used by astronauts to build a lunar tunnel system. This discovery was made after analyzing radar data collected by NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter of the Moon’s Mare Tranquillitatis Pit.

This pit is thought to measure 330 feet across and up to 560 feet deep, making the cross section large enough to possibly house a base itself. Theoretically, once an elevator system is built, along with a lava roof, there could be habitats, workshops, laboratories, 3D printing factories, and hydroponic farms built within this cave.

These structures had been hypothesized for over 50 years, but this is the first time ever that we have demonstrated their existence. As part of a NASA mission, the Miniature Radio-Frequency (Mini-RF) radar captured a series of images of the lunar surface in 2010. Many years later, we analyzed these images with complex signal processing technologies recently developed in our laboratory and discovered that part of the radar reflections from an area of the Sea of Tranquility can be attributed to an underground tube,” said Lorenzo Bruzzone, Researcher from the University of Trento.
