Mouth Haptics Virtual Reality Kiss Metaverse
Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University’s Future Interfaces Group are developing mouth haptics in virtual reality that let you actually feel a kiss in the metaverse. How does it work? The system utilizes an array of ultrasonic transducers that transmit acoustic energy to a user’s mouth, resulting in haptic feedback. These ultrasound impulses can be transmitted to simulate just one tap, pulses, swipes or even vibrations on the teeth, tongue as well as lips.

Most importantly, you won’t have to wear anything on your mouth to feel the haptic feedback, as it uses ultrasonic technology. The mouth was of particular interest to the researchers because it is a close second in tactile sensitivity to the fingertips, making this a unique opportunity for them to add fine-grained haptic effects. PlayStation VR should definitely consider this for future models, as it would make their games that much more immersive.

We explored several effects, including point impulses, swipes, and persistent vibrations. Our haptic sensations can be felt on the lips, teeth and tongue, which can be incorporated into new and interesting VR experiences,” said the researchers.
