NASA employed AI software to help design mission hardware, and the results are otherworldly-looking to say the least. These one-off parts are called evolved structures and creating them involved a computer-assisted design (CAD) specialist. This person reviewed the mission’s requirements and drew in the surfaces where the part connects to the instrument or spacecraft.
This designer also blocked out a path so that the algorithm doesn’t obstruct a laser beam or optical sensor. After all of these off-limits areas are defined, the AI finishes the rest. A complex structure can be designed in as little as an hour or two with the help of AI software. Evolved structures are two-thirds the weight compared to traditional components and can be milled by commercial vendors.
