NASA astronaut Don Pettit captured an incredible photo of a starry night above Earth from the SpaceX Crew 9 Dragon vehicle on the International Space Station (ISS). More specifically, he used his homemade orbital star tracker from the starboard window in Crew 9 Dragon.
The colors that you see are in part from the soon to be rising sun interacting with Earth’s atmosphere. As for equipment, Pettit used a Nikon Z9 mirrorless camera with a Sigma 14mm f1.4 lens (5 sec / f1.4 / ISO 6400), while the final image was edited with Photoshop to get the optimal levels, contrast, color, etc. For those wondering, astronauts aboard the ISS use NASA’s “Space Network” for their internet, which basically consists of a system of Tracking and Data Relay Satellites (TDRS) that relay data to Earth-based stations.
