NASA Hubble Spitzer Space Telescope Kepler Supernova Remnant 1604
NASA’s Hubble and Spitzer space telescopes captured this colorful image of Kelper’s supernova renmant, also known as Supernova 1604. At first glance, it looks like a colorful cloud of smoke, but upon closer inspection, this actually shows regions with multimillion-degree gas or extremely high-energy particles.

Optical data from Hubble can be seen in yellow, which reveals 10,000-degree Celsius gas where the supernova shock wave is slamming into the densest regions of surrounding gas. This extends all the way from the center to the upper-right of the cloud. As for Spitzer, its infrared data highlights microscopic dust particles swept up and heated by the supernova shock wave, depicted in red mostly at the center and along the top edge.

In October 1604, sky watchers spotted a new bright dot among the stars. This supernova was named for German astronomer Johannes Kepler, who studied it extensively. Our telescopes still observe its slowly expanding remnant,” said the NASA Hubble Mission Team.
