Remember Matt Damon in “The Martian”? If you’ve always wanted to experience something similar, NASA’s Mars Dune Alpha mission could be just the thing. In preparation for manned trips to Mars, NASA started accepting applications today for four people to live in Mars Dune Alpha, which is basically a 1,700-square-foot Martian habitat, created by a 3D-printer, located inside a building at Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The lucky few who are chosen for the mission will be paid and work a simulated Martian exploration mission, complete with spacewalks, limited communications back home, rationing food / resources and handling equipment failures. NASA will eventually conduct three of these experiments with the first one starting in the fall next year. Every meal will consist of ready-to-eat space food, but applicants need to meet strict requirements, like having a master’s degree in a science, engineering or math field or pilot experience.
