NASA JPL Jupiter Moon Ganymede Audio
Ever wanted to hear what Jupiter’s moon Ganymede sounds like? If so, then you’re in luck, as NASA / JPL’s Juno mission collected enough data to generate a 50-second audio track during the spacecraft’s close flyby of Ganymede on June 7, 2021. During its closest approach, it was within 645 miles of the moon’s surface and traveling at a relative velocity of 41,600 mph.

On a related note, Jack Connerney from NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, managed to produce the most detailed map ever obtained of Jupiter’s magnetic field. This was made possible from data collected during 32 orbits of Juno’s prime mission, thus providing new insights into the planet’s mysterious Great Blue Spot, a magnetic oddity at the planet’s equator.

NASA JPL Jupiter Moon Ganymede Audio

This soundtrack is just wild enough to make you feel as if you were riding along as Juno sails past Ganymede for the first time in more than two decades. If you listen closely, you can hear the abrupt change to higher frequencies around the midpoint of the recording, which represents entry into a different region in Ganymede’s magnetosphere,” said Scott Bolton, Juno Principal Investigator of the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio.
