North Korea conducted its most powerful nuclear test to date earlier today, and it’s claimed to be an advanced hydrogen bomb for a long-range missile. This prompted the threat of a “massive” military response from the United States if it or its allies were threatened. As opposed to the relatively simple atomic bomb, the hydrogen bomb can be 1,000 times more powerful, because it uses fusion – or atomic nuclei coming together – to produce explosive energy, rather than fission. “Atomic bombs rely on fission, or atom-splitting, just as nuclear power plants do. The technology of the hydrogen bomb is more sophisticated, and once attained, it is a greater threat. It can also be made small enough to fit on a head of an ICBM,” reports Al Jazeera.
