Oppo Mobile Telecommunications recently had a patent with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO) approved on September 16, 2021, titled ‘electronic device and image capture direction control method therefor’, and the sketches appear to show a multi-directional camera built into the side of a smartphone.
Where does this come in handy? Well, imagine being at a car show and a rarity drives by on your side. Normally, you’d have to orient yourself and the smartphone to take a picture, this side-mounted sensor eliminates that inconvenience.

Instead of having to manually open the camera app on your smartphone, this sensor automatically detects moving subjects out of the frame, and the mirror rotates before activating the camera to snap an in-focus photo. Since a mirror is used, no additional camera sensors or hardware is required. Oppo is known for thinking outside the box, which holds especially true with their smartphone cameras, like this double-sided pop-up camera revealed earlier this year.
