Panasonic 3D Upgrade Overclock CPU
Tito from Macho Nacho Productions recently worked on upgrading a Panasonic 3DO, a 32-bit console that was ahead of its time. The 3DO originally debuted in 1993 at a hefty $699.99 in the U.S., making it one of the priciest consoles of its era. This high cost (equivalent to over $1,400 in 2025 dollars) limited its market appeal compared to cheaper competitors.

The 3DO has an ARM60 RISC CPU that runs at 12.5 MHz normally. But the ARM60 can handle up to 30 MHz at 5V, so it has room to be pushed faster. It also has two video co-processors (“Madam” and “Clio”) that run at 25 MHz, which might be sped up too. In this project, Tito soldered a wire to L122 and another to a different pad, connecting the ARM60’s MCLK pin to a new clock source.

He also added a RetroGEM, a digital-to-digital HDMI upscaler kit made for retro consoles like the 3DO, to give high-quality HDMI output. It swaps out the 3DO’s old-school video outputs (composite, S-video, or RGB) for a digital HDMI signal, making it work with modern TVs and giving clearer, sharper pictures.

Lastly, he included a Crown Arcade optical drive emulator (ODE) that replaces the CD-ROM drive, letting games load from SD cards or USB drives. A faster CPU could cut down load times or make ODE-loaded games run better, fitting well with the updated setup. Both the ODE and RetroGEM need a stable system to work right, and the RetroGEM requires proper startup conditions, as overclocking too much might cause timing problems.
