Long before the Game Boy Advance SP, there was the PC Engine LT handheld console. This Japan-only device was released in December 1991 at the price of around $700 USD ($1,563 in 2023) and basically a PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16) with an integrated flip-up screen as well as an integrated speaker.

Some may confuse this with the TurboExpress, which was released in 1990, but the LT uses a power supply, which means it can be connected to a PC-Engine CD unit. The D-pad and buttons are built directly into the console, while additional controllers can be plugged in for multiplayer games. Most importantly, the screen can be used independently of the game console, enabling you to watch TV or even as a PC monitor. For those interested in adding the PC Engine LT to their collection, it will cost you at least $2,500 – $5,000+ depending on the condition.

But the PC Engine LT is much more than a PC Engine with a screen, compatible with the vast majority of peripherals and extensions, the console has an antenna and a TV tuner, something that was tremendously practical in those years. Being considered a portable console, it has a controller built into the casing itself, in addition to having an input for the usual pad, which enables multiplayer gaming to a greater extent than on the original console,” said Info Consolas.
