RAI Institute Ultra Mobile Vehicle Wheeled Robot Stunts
The RAI Institute has unveiled their Ultra Mobile Vehicle (UMV), which is essentially a two-wheeled robot designed to perform stunts, like bunny hops onto tables. It can also drive, turn, and comes to a sudden stop using a technology called a track-stand.

All of the UMV’s driving, landings, balance, and track-stands are achieved through reinforcement learning. In other words, there isn’t a human off to the side using a remote control. We could most certainly see this robot getting its own X Games-like event in the near future where several of them face off to see who can perform the best trick.

We need to make robots smarter, more agile and dexterous, and generally easier to use — more like people. Once we do that, robots and other types of intelligent systems will increase productivity, free people from dangerous work, care for the disabled, and help people live better lives,” said Marc Raibert, Executive Director, Robotics and AI Institute.
