Ren Xiaorong is the latest AI news anchor for People’s Daily in China capable of delivering breaking headlines 24-hours a day and 365 days a year. Several of the country’s media outlets including Xinhua, Hunan TV and CCTV also have their own AI-powered virtual presenters, due to them being able to broadcast around the clock, thus reducing labor costs.

At this time, Ren Xiaorong has only been trained on data about China’s annaul Two Sessions political conference, but can be used to discuss other news topics. However, the People’s Daily app only lets users select topics they want to learn more about, effectively limiting the number of subjects it can talk about. Once Ren Xiaorong went viral on Weibo, many users were displeased, as they believe human news anchors perform the job much better than any AI ever could.
