Restoring M91 Game Boy Kiosk DMG-01
Elliot Coll of The Retro Future stumbled upon a rare Nintendo M91 Game Boy kiosk and decided to do a full restoration. This was a promotional display used in stores from 1989 to 1993 to showcase the original Game Boy (DMG-01). It was discovered in poor condition at a construction site, with significant damage to its particle board structure.

In addition to the particle board being largely deteriorated, it lacked its original Game Boy demo unit but included a slot for securing the handheld and a custom cable connecting its link port to the kiosk’s power supply. Unlike the Game Boy DemoVision kiosk, the M91 doesn’t have a CRT screen or a way to mirror the display, so it’s just a plain gray plastic stand with a rounded top.

Restoring M91 Game Boy Kiosk DMG-01
Elliot worked hard to save as much of the original particle board as possible. He then teamed up with Don, a talented furniture restorer, who was great at fixing the busted parts, especially one section that had already been cut out. However, the most important part of this restoration was obtaining one of the super rare Game Boy demo units, a crucial component to keep the project true to the original.

Simply put, the restoration meant fixing or remaking the kiosk’s working parts, like the slot that holds the Game Boy tight and the special power cable. The aim was to get the kiosk back to how it used to be in stores, showing off a working Game Boy, complete with working visual bits, like the banner at the top.
