Nearly two weeks after the iPhone Duo reached Apple Stores, a pattern of cracked inner screens has shifted some attention toward the Galaxy Z Fold8, currently priced at $1,599.99 (was $1,900). Owners reported the damage appearing after only a handful of openings, often with a tight hinge and a pop just before a bright line formed across the display.
Apple confirmed an issue affecting a small number of units and directed owners to AppleCare for replacements. iFixit teardowns pointed to a center support bar in the hinge that may not drop far enough during folding, creating a stress point on the flexible panel. Claims from a Foxconn employee suggested quality checks were relaxed to meet launch supply after low yields.

Samsung spent years refining their book-style foldables, getting it just perfect throughout eight iterations. The new Galaxy Z Fold8, which arrived in early August, weighs an astounding 201 grams and measures a mere 9.7mm when folded, making it far lighter and thinner than its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Duo. To be more specific, its 254 grams and 11.3mm are quite large in contrast. The Z Fold8’s larger shape expands to a 4:3 inner display, making it ideal for anyone who enjoys multitasking on One UI 9. Sales of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 rose 20 percent in Korea during the week following the Duo’s release, according to local reports. Prospective buyers appear to have weighed the reports of early screen failures against Samsung’s established track record in the category.
Both devices cost a whopping $2,000 at launch, although the Fold8 is $100 cheaper. After all these years of customizing the software, the Z Fold8 handles split views and desktop style work like a pro; in the meantime, the Duo’s iOS-like transitions are seamless for first-party programs, but third-party apps can occasionally lag behind.
Dust is still a huge issue for the hinges on both smartphones. The Duo has an IP68 classification, which means it can withstand more muck and dirt. However, in real-world use, we’ve noticed a few fractures appear on the Apple device. Samsung has been doing this for a long time, so many owners report that their smartphone seems much more polished after everyday use. However, since Apple got engaged, interest in foldables has increased slightly.
