Shane Wighton StuffMadeHere Robot Paint Mural Wall
Inventor Shane Wighton is back at it again, and this time, he’s created a robot that can paint giant murals on walls. Does it look familiar? That’s because the idea is based on a three-axis CNC machine that has been modified to use a horizontal axis spanning the entire wall, while the vertical axis holds a separate gantry capable of painting a small grid within the larger mural.

Officially called Jansky, named after the street artist Banksy, the biggest obstacle Wighton had to overcome was determining how to lay the dots of paint evenly at a specific size without making a mess. So, he came up with the idea of adjusting how far away the spray gun is to paint different-sized dots. This contraption is all powered by an Arduino Uno that turns the positional commands into movements for the stepper motors and servo. Lastly, to generate the dot array, a digital image was converted into four layers that each correspond to cyan, yellow, magenta and black before every dot is scaled based on the color intensity.
