Using a Meta Quest VR headest, The Soloist VR is a free solo rock climbing experience unlike any other that you have experienced. It filmed in 360° virtual reality using an Insta360 Titan camera, allowing you to look up, around and even down as Honnold free-solo climbs his way through famous climbs around the world. To make this film a reality, the crew needed to fabricate new types of equipment and custom build rigging to haul their 5.5kg VR camera during the shoot.
The most important component of the VR rig is the Insta360 Titan, which boasts 8 lenses and shoots 10K 3D video using Micro Four Thirds sensors. However, the rigging alone for the camera took a year to fine tune and was an integral part of the entire production. They tackled these three requirements: hanging the camera as far out from the cliff face as possible, making it stable in the wind, and small enough to be carried in a backpack for quick deployment.

He wasn’t used to crampons or ice axes. We did some acclimatisation trips around the Aguille du Midi, and Alex adapted quite well. Alex said it was the maybe most extreme high alpine experience of his life!,” said Nico Hojac, professional mountaineer.
