Let’s face it, speedrunners just couldn’t best each other’s times for Level 8-2 in Super Mario Bros. for the longest time, that is until a Bullet Bill glitch was discovered. Put simply, the glitch saves time by having Mario bounce off a Bullet Bill and skipping the “walking to the castle” animation.
If this glitch looks familiar, that is because it’s actually a variation of a wall clip that can be performed inside the block at the bottom of the flagpole at the end of most levels. This flagpole glitch essentially skips the “lowering the flagpole” animation, thus saving a significant amount of time. The current record for Level 8-2 is 4 minutes, 54 seconds and 631 milliseconds by Niftski. One oddity that GTAce discovered is that there is a 1 in 1000 chance of having a piranha plant despawn during a speedrun.
