Summit Aerospace’s high-altitude weather balloon, soaring at 70,000 feet, recorded a commercial airliner flying below at around 500 mph. The plane, probably at 30,000–40,000 feet, looks like it’s speeding underneath, giving a strange view most people will never see.
This balloon has 360-degree cameras and was sent up to grab amazing pictures from the stratosphere. Summit Aerospace, famous for scientific and exploratory balloon missions, previously filmed unique footage of the 2024 solar eclipse, proving their talent for high-altitude video. Speaking of eclipses, this footage was captured above Montreal, Canada as the balloon, known as Project Dorothy, was ascending to capture an eclipse.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and organizations like NORAD monitor high-altitude balloons to ensure they don’t pose risks to aviation. Balloons are typically launched in areas with low air traffic, and their paths are coordinated to avoid conflicts. The Summit Aerospace balloon posed no hazard, as is typical for such launches, but the chance of it filming a plane directly below requires a fortunate alignment of flight paths.
