TECNO Bezel-less Concept Phone Smartphone
Chinese phone maker TECNO just shared a concept that claims to erase the last remaining edge around a smartphone display. The company calls it an industry-first zero-millimeter border, measured at 0 microns, and plans to show the working prototype at IFA in Berlin this September.

Flagship phones are approaching 100% screen coverage, making it impossible to detect gaps. Xiaomi and Honor have done an excellent job of eliminating those annoying hidden cameras and razor thin frames that used to reveal them, but TECNO has taken it a step further by removing the remaining black frame from around the glass on all sides, allowing the screen to literally fill the entire face of the phone. You can watch movies, play games, take photos, and do whatever you want right up to the phone’s edge without that unsightly black line getting in the way.

TECNO Bezel-less Concept Phone Smartphone
The company believes their unique display structure is the key to all of this. They’ve basically reworked the internal setup to tuck all of the usual cables, seals, and circuitry out of the way and under the active pixel area, as well as made some structural changes to the frame, so there’s no longer a need for those dead zones that were previously required for safety reasons. As a result, they were able to create a display that evenly meets the edges on all four sides, with only a little cutout for the front camera. And, get this, they’re stating that this is only the beginning; the same technology will be used to shape the appearance of all future phones. They’re talking about a completely new visual identity that will distinguish their phones from the throng.

Let’s get back to reality for a moment because there are certain things that need to be answered, such as how they plan to prevent fingers from resting on active pixels when we use the phone normally. What about durability? If we drop it, will the pixels be smashed? They have not provided any durability statistics or specifications, and the unit remains a concept rather than a manufacturing model. It’s worth mentioning that TECNO has a track record of taking prototypes and turning them into genuine goods, such as ultra-thin frames, folding phones, and motorized camera modules, so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.
