Tesla Model Y Equipped with FSD Drives Itself Off the Giga Berlin Factory Line

A new Model Y is being produced in a quiet corner of the Giga Berlin factory. The car drives itself around the campus, past machinery, stops at a Supercharger and parks in the outbound lot.

Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system has been on city streets and highways for years, but this is something new. This latest clip shows a Model Y driving around the Giga Berlin site, avoiding obstacles, following a set path, and even charging itself before parking. Tesla saves time and labor by having cars move themselves around when testing FSD right out of the factory. That’s right, no more human test drivers are needed to move the cars around.

This started earlier this year but André Thierig, Tesla’s Senior Director of Manufacturing at Giga Berlin says it’s now fully integrated. Every Model Y that exits the factory’s “Light Tunnel” for final quality inspection now uses FSD to get to the outbound lot. The process is simple: the car initiates FSD, drives around the factory, stops at an on-site Supercharger for a pre-delivery charge and then parks itself for transfer.


During the factory tour, each car’s cameras, sensors and decision making systems are tested in a controlled but dynamic environment. It’s essentially a stress test to see if the system can handle tight turns, moving objects and precise movements before the car hits the road. Earlier this year Tesla set a global record by having a Model Y drive from Giga Texas to a customer’s home in 30 minutes, going through highways, traffic lights and city streets.

But Tesla’s manufacturing automation is part of a bigger picture. The new Cybercab, a steering wheel free electric vehicle designed as a robotaxi, is the future where self driving is not just a feature but the purpose of the vehicle.
