Photographer Robert Landsberg happened to be right next to Mount St. Helens when it erupted on May 18, 1980. Unfortunately, he soon realized that there was no safe way out, so he put his photography gear into a backpack and then covered it with his body. Continue reading to see more.

What you see above are the final shots that were found in Mr. Landsberg’s camera after his body was recovered 17-days later from the ash. These images were published in the January 1981 issue of National Geographic.
