A classic franchise is sneaking back into the limelight, and it’s packing a virtual reality punch that might just change how we slink through the dark. Thief VR Legacy of Shadow, hitting PlayStation VR2, Meta Quest, and PC VR in 2025. Developed by Maze Theory with Vertigo Games and Eidos-Montreal, this game plunges you into the grimy, steampunk-soaked streets of The City like never before.
You’ll lace up as Magpie, a sharp-witted thief orphaned by the iron-fisted Baron Ulysses Northcrest, who runs The City like a dictator. Unlike the grizzled heroes of past Thief games, Magpie’s tale is a fresh one, fueled by survival and a hunt for a cryptic artifact linked to history’s shadows. “We set out to create a [virtual reality] experience where players don’t just play a thief; they become one,” says Richard Stitselaar, CEO of Vertigo Games, and the vibe is unmistakably immersive.

Stealth is the soul of Thief VR, and the PS VR2’s tech makes it feel like you’re living it. With Sense controllers and haptic feedback, you’re physically crouching, leaning, and messing with the world around you. Need to douse a torch? Fire a water arrow, slap it out with your hands, or—get this—blow it out with a perfectly timed puff. “The VR mechanics allow you to live out the fantasy of stealth in a way that no other medium can replicate,” says Wiebe van der Werk, Sr. Global Communications and Events Manager at Vertigo Games, and it’s hard to argue when you’re knee-deep in the action.
The game throws open multiple paths and playstyles, letting you ghost past guards, chuck an arrow to distract them, or go old-school with a blackjack to the noggin. The City’s massive, sprawling layout begs you to poke around, with secrets stashed in every nook and cranny. “It’s been tough keeping this one in the shadows—literally,” says Phil White, CEO of Maze Theory. “We’ve worked tirelessly to stay true to the spirit of the series, delivering a level of immersion unlike anything you’ve seen.”
The story teases a juicy conspiracy around the artifact, with threads tying back to the original Thief trilogy’s lore—though newbies can jump in without homework. Longtime fans will catch Easter eggs, maybe even a familiar voice (Garrett, anyone?), as hinted in the trailer. With Eidos-Montreal on board, the game nails the balance of honoring its roots while pushing VR tech to the limit, blending nostalgia with a bold new edge.
