Researchers may call it “Star Wars technology”, but the Navy’s is real, and can fire shells at up to 7-times speed of sound to penetrate concrete 100-miles away, or 6 half-inch thick steel plates. Head of US Naval Research Rear Admiral Matthew Klunder said the futuristic electromagnetic railgun had already undergone extensive testing on land, and will be mounted on high-speed vessel the USNS Millinocket for sea trials in 2016.
