Time-Lapse Video Cigarettes Soil
H/t: Peta Pixel
There’s the world’s first talking time-lapse, and then this one, showing what happens to three cigarettes in soil over the span of a year. It’s safe to say that throwing used (or unused) cigarettes into soil isn’t the best for the environment, as the plastic fibers in them are non-biodegradable.

Despite there being around 600 ingredients in cigarettes, the basic components are tobacco, chemical additives, a filter, and paper wrapping. Cigarette butts are essentially made from a type of plastic (plasticized cellulose acetate), and can take up to 14 years to break apart. Even when that happens, the cigarette butts then split into microplastics, which can stay in the environment for an unknown period of time.
