Translucent metal sounds like something you’d seen in a science fiction film, but this material exists and it’s not as as mysterious as you think. See-through metals are nothing new, except for the fact that aluminum in this form does not exist…yet. Molten sodium hydroxide does not turn translucent until a chemical reaction occurs, while aluminum oxide isn’t even a metal.
One company, the Surmet Corporation, touts their aluminum oxynitride (ALON) as a transparent ceramic composed of aluminum, oxygen and nitrogen. This is called transparent aluminum by many, as it’s optically transparent (≥ 80%) in the near-ultraviolet, visible, and midwave-infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. Plus, the material is four times as hard as fused silica glass, 85% as hard as sapphire, and nearly 115% as hard as magnesium aluminate spinel, making it perfect for transparent windows, plates, domes, rods, tubes, etc.
