Currently, humans produce approximately 400-tons of plastic waste each year, with ever increasing amounts of single-use plastics. Transparent wood can be substituted for environmentally damaging petroleum-based plastics such as polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polyethylene, acrylic, and more. German scientist Siegfried Fink originally fabricated transparent wood in 1992 and the material has since been improved by researchers from around the world. The majority of transparent wood is developed using thin slices of wood, which means that it has the strength of the original material, yet is lighter in weight.
