Over a decade ago, there was a crowdfunding campaign for the Air Umbrella that generated an invisible force field of sorts, but what if you created on that uses water instead? James Orgill of The Action Lab wanted to find out, thus the laminar flow water umbrella was born.
This water umbrella relies on laminar flow, which occurs when the fluid flows in smooth, well-defined layered paths with little or no mixing. The fluid tends to flow without lateral mixing at low velocities as adjacent layers slide past one another similar to playing cards. James tried a 20-foot spraying radius at first, but that didn’t quite work due to a battle of momentum between falling raindrops and then the umbrella itself. What could solve that issue? Something that most people do not have easy access to. Or, you could just take a ride in MJI’s ‘GACHA’, a self-driving shuttle bus that can operate in all weather conditions.
