The rumors are true, Michael Bay is attached to direct a live-action film adaptation of OutRun for Universal Pictures, based on SEGA’s 1986 video game of the same name. Sydney Sweeney is also on board as a producer, alongside Bay and his Platinum Dunes partner Brad Fuller, with SEGA’s Toru Nakahara producing and Shuji Utsumi overseeing for SEGA.
The script is being written by Jayson Rothwell, though plot details are still under wraps. Given Bay’s track record with high-octane action like Transformers and Ambulance, expect a lot of explosions and fast cars, probably amping up the game’s simple “drive to the finish before time runs out” premise. No word yet on whether Sweeney might star, but her producing role is confirmed for now.

A storyline that includes some of today’s technology, yet still gives off nostalgic vibes, is possible, or so we think. Imagine Jake “Cobra” Malone, a disgraced ex-racer, teaming up with sharp journalist Mia Ventura (Sweeney) to drive a 1986 Ferrari Testarossa across the U.S. in the illegal OutRun Rally, a 3,000-mile race with a $10 million prize. Their goal: expose the race’s mastermind, tech mogul Victor “Viper” Kane, who’s secretly testing an AI superweapon in the cars to hack global systems.
