Here’s a first look at Vyommitra, a half-humanoid spacefaring robot being developed by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) to function on-board the Gaganyaan, a crewed orbital spacecraft. The robot was first unveiled to the public on January, 22 2020 at the Human Spaceflight and Exploration symposium in Bengaluru.
Vyommitra will accompany Indian astronauts in space missions and will also be a part of uncrewed experimental Gaganyaan missions prior to the manned spaceflight missions to better understand what weightlessness and radiation do to the human body during long durations in orbit. Currently, it can speak Hindi / English and perform multiple tasks, including mimicking human activity, recognizing other humans, and respond to their queries.
