Most may have never heard or seen the Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96-C, but that’s because this behemoth is typically hidden away in container ships. It’s currently the world’s largest reciprocating engine and the largest 14-cylinder version stands 44.3-feet tall.
This engine weighs over 2,300 tonnes and produces 80.08 megawatts. RTA96-C first entered commercial service in September 2006 aboard the Emma Mærs, with common rail technology, rather than traditional camshaft, chain gear, fuel pump and hydraulic actuator systems. This generates maximum performance at lower revolutions per minute (rpm), improves fuel efficiency and emits lower levels of harmful emissions.
