When humans start building things (roads, walls, buildings, etc.) around trees, they simply learn to adapt and grow their roots around whatever is nearby, including sidewalk stones. However, there are some tree species that have developed special root extensions that pop out of soil, in order to get oxygen, when it is not available in the soil because of excess water.
