Bowie Stray and his Blue Bombers fly across a desert landscape, their Cloudcutters weaving through a storm of enemy fire. This is Wild Blue, the new on-rails shooter from Chuhai Labs that feels like a long lost cousin to Star Fox.
Chuhai Labs, based in Kyoto, Japan, have the credentials to back it up. Founded by Nintendo veteran Giles Goddard who worked on the original Star Fox, the studio knows what makes an on-rails shooter fly. Wild Blue follows Bowie Stray, an arrogant pilot commanding his unit against Grimclaw’s army, who want to take over the planet. The adventure takes place across many environments, deserts, tundras and jungles, each looking colourful and almost artistic. Every mission feels like a journey, with big landscapes that make you want to linger even as you dodge enemy fire.

Gameplay is all about the on-rails formula that defined Star Fox but polished for modern players. You control your Cloudcutter with precise inputs, barrel rolling through tight gaps and locking onto enemies with accuracy. The campaign is full of variety – one minute you’re outmanoeuvring an enemy ace squadron in a dogfight, the next you’re facing off against a massive boss that fills the screen with menace. Hidden paths and secret objectives add replayability, so you’ll want to explore every nook and cranny of the map to unlock new routes. A scoring system rewards skillful play, so you’ll want to chain combos and perfect your runs for high scores.

Chuhai Labs have created a world that feels alive, with dynamic lighting and rich surroundings that make each flight look great. Whether it’s the shine of sunlight off a frozen peak or the glow of a neon lit city under attack, the art direction is superb. The music (which is yet to be fully revealed) hints at a big orchestral and electronic score to match the game’s ferocity. It’s the kind of presentation that draws you in and makes you play mission after mission.

Tech-wise Wild Blue will run on PC. Minimum specs are an Intel Core i7-7700K, 6GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080, recommended specs are 8GB of RAM. So it should run on mid-range systems and look and play fine without any issues. No release date yet but you can wishlist on Steam and join the community on the studio’s Discord.
