The world’s largest single-capacity offshore wind turbine by the China Three Gorges Corporation (CTG), called MySE 16-260, is now operational in the Taiwan Strait. Its central tower stands 499-feet tall, while the generator weighs in at a hefty 385 tons, and is capable of generating 66 gigawatt-hours of energy per year, or enough to power 36,000 homes.
You can find it at a wind farm off the coast of the Fujian Province in China, where winds regularly reach 32 mph. So far, it has survived Typhoon Talim, thanks in part to over 1,000 sensors capable of helping the turbine adapt to adverse weather conditions in real time. This 16-megawatt (MW) wind turbine project cost approximately $885-million USD to complete and has a swept area of 50,000 square meters.

Most of China’s coastal areas are in typhoon zones, and if there is no wind turbine that can withstand typhoons, it can be said that wind power has little future in China,” said Qiying Zhang, the Chief Technology Officer at the Mingyang Smart Energy.
