A 1993 Audi S4 sits in a Missouri garage, its bland exterior hiding a monster within. This custom built beast was once the world’s fastest sedan, clocking 261 mph at Bonneville Speed Week in 2012. Now it’s up for auction on Cars & Bids, someone can own a piece of automotive history that combines German engineering with American bravado.
Built by Jeff Gerner of Four Ring Performance, this S4 started as a midsize sedan, the kind you’d see ferrying executives in the early 90s. The original 2.2L turbocharged 5 cylinder engine made 227 horsepower, good for a 150 mph top speed. Gerner had bigger plans. He turned the car into a 1,155 horsepower monster, measured at the wheels, with 706 lb-ft of torque. That’s more power than most modern supercars.

The heart of this beast is still a 5 cylinder engine, but it’s far from stock. With billet components and a massive Borg Warner S400SX turbo, the engine makes performance that redefines what a sedan can do. A manual transmission and all wheel drive keep the power in check, so the car can harness its fury. At Bonneville in 2012 it didn’t just break records, it obliterated them, averaging 238 mph over a measured mile and 261 mph top speed.

To achieve those speeds it took more than just a big engine. The S4 has a 6 point roll cage, composite windows designed to shatter, and a fire suppression system for safety at extreme speeds. A parachute is still fitted to the car and helped slow it down after its record runs. These modifications make it look like a race car ready for another record attempt, but the seller says it could be made street legal in some states with minimal modifications. Whether anyone would dare drive this beast on public roads is another question altogether.

Inside the car is a time capsule of the 90s Audi, but with a twist. The roll cage dominates the interior, a constant reminder of its purpose. Gauges and controls are functional, not flashy, built for a driver focused on speed not luxury. It’s a raw and unfiltered performance car from an era when cars were just that, but with modern engineering that takes it to another level.

The auction on Cars & Bids has already generated a lot of interest and it’s easy to see why. This S4 is a story of ambition, ingenuity and a desire for speed. Owning it means inheriting a legacy, a car that defied convention and won. Bidding is open and the car waits for someone brave enough to claim it. Will it go back to the salt flats for another record run or prowl the streets as the ultimate sleeper? That’s up to the next owner.
