At 02:39 UTC on Monday July 21, 1969, Armstrong opened the hatch, and at 02:51 UTC began his descent to the lunar surface. After describing the surface dust as “very fine-grained” and “almost like a powder,” Armstrong stepped off Eagle’s footpad and uttered his famous line, “That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind” six and a half hours after landing.
