Ever wonder just how much horsepower a real horse has? If so, Donut Media and Adam Savage have you covered with their latest experiment. Scientifically speaking, a horsepower (hp) refers to a unit of measurement for power, or the rate at which work is done – roughly 550 foot-pounds per second (745.7 watts).
To conduct this experiment, they had to find a way to connect a horse onto a dyno machine, or a device that measures force, torque and power. Fortunately, Donut Media found Los Angeles-based Motivo to modify a Honda Civic with wheels that would turn the rollers on a portable dyno machine using a real horse. The latter of which pulls on a cable connected to the vehicle’s transmission, thus turning its wheels.
