Dauphin DTR-1 Touchscreen Windows Tablet
Long before the iPad and Huawei MatePad Pro, there was the Dauphin DTR-1, a touchscreen Windows tablet from 1993. Weighing in at 2.5-pounds, this device was thought to be the world’s smallest 486 computers, and one of the first palmtops to run the Microsoft Windows operating system.

Even if you’ve heard of this machine, most do not know that it was manufactured by IBM and cost a whopping $2,495 USD ($5,301 in 2023). The DTR-1 came bundled with a keyboard, stylus and carrying case. It cam standard with 4MB of RAM and a 20MB hard drive, but an extra 2MB could be added for $199. Want an external 3 1/2-inch floppy drive? That will be an additional $199.

As for the operating system, it ran Microsoft Windows 3.1 with Pen Extensions), first released in 1992. Unfortunately, consumers just found the DTR-1 to be too expensive with a keyboard that just wasn’t large enough to be productive and you can’t forget the dismal 2-hour battery life either.
