DARPA has selected Northrop Grumman to develop a lunar railroad concept as part of their broader 10-year Lunar Architecture (LunA-10) Capability Study. When built, it would be able to transport humans, supplies and resources for commercial ventures across the lunar surface.
During this study, Northrop Grumman will define the interfaces and resources required to build a lunar rail network before establishing a critical list of foreseeable cost, technological as we well logistical risks. After completing the research, prototypes, demonstrations and analyses of a fully operating lunar rail system concept will have to be studied. Should everything go smoothly, a lunar railroad would help contribute to a space economy for the United States and international partners.
