Pocket Z Handheld PC Raspberry Pi
Icepat’s Pocket Z is a pocket-sized PC powered by a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W board. Its design was inspired by the ultra-mobile personal computers (UMPCs) of the early 2000s, like the HP Jornada 720.

Hardware wise, it features a 7-inch (1024 x 600) display a Raspberry Pi Zero 2W single-board computer, an Atmega32U4 keyboard controller, and a custom PCB. You won’t find a standard QWERTY keypad, but rather a custom layout similar to the Ti-92 graphing calculator with some extra keys that function as a D-Pad and action buttons. Since Pocket Z is still a work in progress, you’ll only find connection points for a Li-Po battery, USB Type-C charging port and a USB Type-A port for peripherals. The machine currently boots into a Debian Linux-based Raspberry Pi OS.

Back in the 1990s & early 2000s the PDAs & UMPC where all the rage, devices like the Psion 3 and 5MX, the HP Jornada 720 or more recently the Sharp Zaurus where all very capable pocketable computers that were running real operating systems. While our smartphones replaced them long ago and are way more powerful than anything from back then, I do believe that the disappearance of this category of devices left an empty space behind,” said Icepat.
