The US Air Force’s secret ULTRA spy drone has been revealed to the public for the first time. Built by DZYNE, the Unmanned Long-endurance Tactical Reconnaissance Aircraft (ULTRA) would complement the MQ-9 Reaper on long-range reconnaissance missions.
ULTRA is actually based on an existing sports model aircraft that was converted into a military hardened unmanned air vehicle using commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) UAS technology. Technologically, ULTRA is not as advanced as the Reaper, but it’s far more cost efficient, and boasts an endurance of 80 hours while transporting a payload of over 400 pounds. It also comes equipped with hardened GPS and can carry a reconfigurable variety of electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR), radio frequency (RF), and other intelligence gathering payloads.
