Micro Journal V7.0 Modern Typewriter E-Ink
Always wanted a modern typewriter? Meet the Micro Journal V7.0, a DIY, distraction-free writing device designed by developer Un Kyu Lee. This portable device pairs a mechanical keyboard with a 4.76″ LilyGo T5 E-ink (960 x 540) display, aiming to offer a focused writing experience without the bells and whistles of modern tech.

It’s powered by an ESP32-S3 microcontroller and features a keyboard with a staggered layout—unlike the ortholinear designs of past models—making it more familiar as well as comfortable for typists used to standard setups. The Micro Journal V7.0 also has a Cherry MX profile keyboard PCB, but key switches and caps aren’t included in the base $339 price; you’ll need to supply your own or pay extra for a fully assembled unit. Another component you’ll need to bring is an 18650 LiPo battery, as it’s not shipped with one.

Micro Journal V7.0 Modern Typewriter E-Ink
Functionally, it boots almost instantly into a no-frills text editor, saving your work to a removable microSD card. It also supports WiFi syncing to Google Drive, blending that old-school typewriter vibe with a bit of cloud convenience. Best of all, this an open-source project that shares software, hardware design files, and explanations on GitHub, so anyone with the skills and tools (like a 3D printer for the chassis) can build their own.
