James Hobson, also known as The Hacksmith, completed his plasma lightsaber build recently, but didn’t yet put it to the test, until now. As we mentioned in our previous post, this lightsaber uses liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) stored in a custom-built backpack. This liquid is then mixed with oxygen and turned into a superheated beam of plasma through the process of laminar flow, or the scientific phenomenon that allows liquids to flow smoothly.
The biggest issue was finding the right nozzle to create the highly concentrated flow of gas to form the plasma beam. What they ended up buying was a $4,000 off-the-shelf nozzle and afterwards fine tuned it to generate a plasma jet that matched the lightsaber beam. Unlike, standard lightsaber props, this design is fully retractable. Once activated, it’s hot enough to cut through almost anything, or at least steel and other lightsabers.
