Amazon Astro is a home robot unlike any other, as it’s not only designed to be a personal assistant, but also for home monitoring and keeping in touch with family. It accomplishes this using various technologies, including artificial intelligence, computer vision, multiple sensors, and voice / edge computing, all in a package that can easily be transported if necessary. Let’s say you leave the home for work, school or any other reason, Astro will move autonomously around your home, navigating and checking on specific areas, while also providing a live view of rooms through the Astro app. If an unknown person is detected, the robot automatically sends alerts to the app, or it can use its built-in periscope camera to take a better look at things that are slightly out of reach, such as seeing if the stove was accidentally left on. Activate Alexa Guard, and the robot also detects the sound of a smoke alarm, carbon monoxide alarm, or glass breaking. Using Astro as an entertainment device is as easy as have it follow you from room to room while playing your favorite shows, movies, podcasts, or music. Available later this year, priced at $1449.99 USD or $999.99 for the Day 1 Editions. Sign up for the Day 1 Editions here.

Throughout its development, Astro has gone through hundreds of thousands of hours of internal testing with Amazon employees—both in offices and homes across the country. During my own time with Astro, I’ve thought of lots of new things for it to do—and I’m confident that customers will have even more ideas we haven’t thought of (yet). That’s why we’re offering Astro as part of Day 1 Editions, a program that gives you access to our most ambitious ideas,” said Amazon.
