This Apple Macintosh promo video from 1984 featured then Microsoft CEO Bill Gates extolling the virtues and future of the personal computer. Surprisingly enough, one person you won’t see in this clip is Steve Jobs.
An emotional Steve Jobs first introduced the Macintosh to an enthusiastic crowd on January 24, 1984 at Apple’s annual shareholders meeting, which was held in the Flint Auditorium at De Anza College. Macintosh engineer Andy Hertzfeld described the scene as pure “pandemonium”.

The infamous “1984” commercial during Super Bowl XVIII introduced the Macintosh on January 22, 1984, and despite retailing for $2,495 ($7,541 in 2024), sales managed to reach 70,000 units by May 3, 1984. It allegedly even outsold the IBM PCjr which also began shipping early that year, with one dealer reporting a backlog of more than 600 orders.
