Macintosh Classic II E-Ink Display Mod
Apple fan Dave Luna is know for his retro computing creations, and his latest project involves a Macintosh Classic II. Simply put, he took the shell and added a 16-color grayscale E-ink display powered by a Raspberry Pi that is running custom software to display recent Google Photos highlights.

It wouldn’t be a Macintosh Classic II without a replica System 7 environment to display the photos. Plus, the classic Apple Desktop Bus hardware is supported using an Arduino Micro controller that adapts ADB to USB. For those interested, the exact E-ink display used is the Waveshare 9.7 inch E-Paper Display with HAT. Want the same look, but in a much smaller size? Then look no further than the Elago AW3 AirPods case.

The Paper Mac plays sound through a set of Acer MS1238UA USB-powered speakers inside the case. I included Steven Jay Cohen’s MacOS Classic Sound Pack v1.5 to add some classic Mac audio accents. I wrote a Python script called Pseudo7 to control the experience. It captures Google Photos in-memory, dynamically creates windows for the photos, listens for keyboard input, pushes visuals to the ePaper display, and plays sound files when UI elements update,” said its creator.
