Ascento 2 Robot
When you think of Pixar robots, Wall-E and Eve probably come to mind, but ETH Zurich’s Ascento 2 wouldn’t look out of place alongside those two. It was developed by a group of engineering students and features a self-balancing design, powered by two wheels with built-in hub motors. If it encounters an obstacle, like a small step, it loads its spring-equipped legs before jumping forward. Read more for two videos and additional information.

This 22.9-pound robot has a top speed of 5 mph and can jump up to 1.3 feet in the air. On a fully charge, expect up to 1.5-hours of run time off its battery pack. In addition to jumping, Ascento’s legs enable it to stay upright on uneven terrain by bending at their linkage points independently of one another. You can either remotely control the robot or have it operate autonomously, thanks to cameras as well as other advanced sensors that map its surroundings.
